Bronx, N.Y. – (April 21, 2021) – Following a weekend of voting, Fordham fans have selected their choices as the best of the best for the Fordham women's tennis A-10 25
th Anniversary Team.
Fans were asked to vote on for an eight-person squad, and they came through as all eight were All-Atlantic 10 selections once in their career with two ending up in the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame.
The next anniversary team vote will feature men's tennis.
Here is a deeper look at each women's tennis individual:
Nina Fiore (1995-99): Fiore entered Fordham during the team's first year in the league, playing four seasons in the Atlantic 10. After a successful freshman season recording a combined 20 singles win in dual action and tournament play, she became Fordham's first All-Atlantic 10 honoree in women's tennis following the 1997-98 season. Overall, Fiore recorded a singles record of 51-25 and a double mark of 43-21 over her four-year career. |
Ioana Dragan (1998-2002): Dragan was one of the most decorated players for the Fordham women's tennis program, earning All-Atlantic 10 honors all four years, while being an Academic All-Conference selection three times. She was the 1999 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and the 2001 Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year, while being a two-time NYS Women's Collegiate champion and an Eastern Collegiate Singles champion (2001). The 2001 Hobbs Family Award winner, Dragan compiled an overall 64-23 singles record and a 42-22 doubles mark, which earned her a spot in the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. |
Christina Papa (2002-06): Papa was one of the most consistent performers of her four-year career at Fordham. She earned Atlantic 10 weekly awards twice in her career and was named to the 2004 All-Atlantic 10 team. She registered a singles record of 52-20, while having a 41-23 doubles mark. |
Dominique Liguori Damian (2005-09): Liguori Damian ranks as one of the top all-time players in Fordham history, finishing her career with an undefeated singles record as a senior at 19-0. She was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree, earning First Team honors in 2007 and 2009, and won the Eastern Collegiate Single championship as a senior. The 2009 Hobbs Family Award winner, Liguori Damian racked up a singles record of 61-5 and a doubles mark of 43-14 and received her place in the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. |
Amy Simidian (2011-13): Simidian was a two-year player for the women's tennis team, receiving First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in each of those seasons. She posted a 22-8 singles record as a junior to go with a 17-8 mark in doubles play. Simidian added 11 more singles wins and 13 in doubles play as a senior. She was also a two-year member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll |
Sarah Ali (2011-15): Ali was another two-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection and helped the Rams to their first-ever appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinals in 2015. While totaling at least 14 singles wins in each of her four seasons, Ali was one of the top doubles players, winning 25 doubles matches as a freshman and 23 as a junior. A member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, she totaled 62 singles wins and 76 doubles victories. |
Mayu Sato (2015-17): After being two-time Summit League Player of the Year, Sato transferred to Fordham and made a big impact in her two seasons with the Rams. In her first year, she was First Team All-Atlantic 10, posting a 21-7 singles record, while being 23-7 in doubles. Year two was also a successful one, going 24-8 in singles play and 21-10 in double actions and helping Fordham to the semifinals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship. |
Arina Taluyenko (2018-present): Taluyenko has had an impressive three-year run with the Rams, earning First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in her first season after posting a 22-8 singles record and a 22-9 doubles mark. In her second season, she climbed the national rankings to #74 in the country during the fall season of 2019 and was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week twice in the spring. A two-year member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioners Honor Roll, Tayulenko has kept her strong play going this season with a 6-0 singles record and has been named Player of the Week once. |
