Queens, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the spring season today with a 6-1 win over La Salle at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The Rams opened play by taking the doubles point, winning both completed doubles matches.
Tom Russwurm and
Jofre Segarra got it started with a 6-1 win over Brandon Caban and Dylan Tull at third doubles and then
Max Green and
Alex Makatsaria clinched the point for the Rams with a 6-4 win over Colin Lucius and Nassim Fenjiro at second doubles.
Fordham then took five of the six singles matches for the 6-1 win. After Russwurn won at sixth singes when his opponent withdrew due to injury, Green gave the Rams a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Connor Merrill at the second position.
A La Salle win at first singles made it a 3-1 match but
Lutwin de Macar defeated Caban at fifth singles, 2-6, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch the win for the Rams.
Fordham also picked up wins at and the fourth spot where Makatsaria upended Lucius, 6-1, 7-5, and the third position where
Nicholas Kanazirev outdueled Fenjiro, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 17-15.
The Rams return to action on Sunday, April 11, as they face Temple University in Philadelphia at 1:00 p.m.
