Women’s Soccer Bounces Back with Double Overtime Win over URI

Kristen Cocozza Scores Twice Including Game-Winning Goal in Second Overtime Period

Bronx, N.Y. – (March 25, 2021) – After having a heart-breaking finish on Sunday, the Fordham Rams returned the favor on Thursday afternoon at Jack Coffey Field.  Kristen Cocozza scored twice, including the game-winning tally in double overtime to give Fordham a 2-1 women's soccer win over the Rhode Island Rams.

Fordham (1-2-1, 1-2 A-10) got off to a great start, scoring the opening goal of the contest in the 12th minute.  Kendall Dandridge took a near-side throw-in, finding Milan Bornstein on the right side of the box.  Bornstein turned and crossed the ball to Kristen Cocozza, who found the left side of the net for her first goal of the season.

Rhode Island (1-6-2, 0-2-2 A-10) would tie the game later in the half on a give-and-go between Alyssa Fleming and Brooke Cavino.  Fleming got the return pass and fired a shot from 25 yards into the top left corner of the goal for her first marker of the year.

In the second half, Rhode Island had the better of the chances, the best of which came on a long ball to Aysha Bentick, but Fordham goalkeeper Maria O'Sullivan made a sliding stop to deny the URI forward.

The match went all the way into double overtime before Fordham ended it in the final minute of play.  O'Sullivan made a long kick into the offensive zone, finding Marissa Stanco.  Stanco laid the ball off to Cocozza, who fired the ball past a drawn out URI goalkeeper into the right side of the net from 35 yards out for the game-winning tally.

O'Sullivan finished with two saves for Fordham, recording her first win and first career assist.  For Cocozza, it was her first career multi-goal game and her third career game-winning goal.

Fordham is next in action on Sunday, March 28th, when the Rams head to La Salle for a 1:00 PM contest.
