Fairfield, Conn. – The Fordham women's tennis team ventured up Route 95 to Fairfield on Saturday and picked up its first win of the year with a 5-2 decision over the Stags.
The Rams opened play by taking the doubles point with a pair of doubles wins. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead,
Genevieve Quenville and
Valeriya Deminova took the second position when their Fairfield counterparts withdrew. After the Stags won at first doubles, the point came down to the third spot where
Arina Taluyenko and
Nicole Li defeated Laina Campos and Sophia Prinos, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.
The Rams took a 2-0 lead when Quenville knocked off Laina Campos in straight sets at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1, and then went up 3-0 when Taluyenko won at first singles over Katarina Plumtree, 6-4, 6-0.
Deminova clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Aina March at the second position.
Fairfield made it a 4-2 match at fifth and third singles, before the Rams closed out the day with Li's win over Sophia Prinos at fourth singles, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, March 20, as they travel to Philadelphia to face Davidson College at Saint Joseph's University at 2:00 p.m.
