Baseball Rams Fall to N.Y. Giants at the Polo Grounds

With the 2020 spring sports season canceled by the COVID-19 outbreak, we at Fordham have decided to dig back through our archives and provide our fans with content on some of the outstanding teams and student-athletes who have graced Rose Hill over the years

April 9, 1903– The history between the Fordham baseball team and the New York Giants baseball club goes back a long way.  The Rams had a number of players sign with the Giants over the years, but the two teams also played a number of exhibitions against each other at the Polo Grounds.

The first such game dates back to 1903, where the Rams fell by an 8-2 score.  The two squads would randomly play exhibitions into the 1920s.

Among the many Fordham players to play for the Giants, the list includes Hall of Famer Frankie Frisch, Jack Doyle, Steve Filipowicz, Al LeFevre, Tim McNamara, Dick Rudolph, John "Tip" Tobin, and Babe Young.

In addition to its baseball history, Fordham has also seen its fair share of football games at the Polo Grounds, posting a 59-37-13 record.  The first contest for Rams football at the Polo Grounds was in 1889, and was the location for one of the team's greatest games – a 13-12 win over eventual-Rose Bowl champion Tennessee in 1934.
