Fresno, Calif. – The Fordham softball team suffered a tight 2-1 loss to Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon to wrap up play at the Fresno State Kick-Off Classic. With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-9 through two weekends of play.
Senior
Madie Aughinbaugh made her fifth start of the campaign and allowed just two runs, one earned, over six innings, with both runs scoring on the same play, a fielding error by
Sarah Taffet at short. Aughinbaugh allowed just two baserunners after that but the Fordham offense was held to just one run.
Following a pitching change in the fifth, the Rams rallied.
Kelly Bright drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a groundout. Aughinbaugh put runners on the corners with a single then stole second.
Brianna Pinto drew a walk to load the bases with one out leading to another pitching change. The first batter, Taffet, delivered a single through the right side, scoring Bright easily, but Aughinbaugh was thrown out trying to tie the game. Fordham loaded the bases again in the sixth but failed to bring a runner home.
Both Aughinbaugh and Taffet recorded a pair of hits, the other three coming from Bright,
Julia Martine, and
Amanda Carey. Aughinbaugh did not walk a batter and struck out four.
The Rams are back in action at next weekend's Spring Break Classic at Florida Gulf Coast University. Fordham will kick things off with Southern Illinois on Friday at 4:45 p.m. and then play the hosts right after. They'll also play Harvard, UMass Lowell, and Michigan State over the following two days.
