Softball Drops Both Saturday Contests at Fresno State

RAms Fall to 1-8 on the Young Season

Fresno, Calif. – The Fordham softball team fell twice on Saturday during the Fresno State Kick-Off Classic, losing to Cal Poly, 6-1, and then the hosts, 10-1, in five innings in the evening. With the results, the Rams fall to 1-8 to start the campaign.

Cal Poly struck first against Anne Marie Prentiss, with a pair of singles in the opening frame, then doubled its lead in the second with a two-out RBI single. The Mustangs tacked on three runs in the third, two against Prentiss and one against Devon Miller, who came on in relief. The Rams scratched a run back with two outs in the fourth after Sarah Taffet tripled down the right field line and scored on Amanda Carey's groundout. Fordham loaded the bases but couldn't bring home any more runs. Cal Poly got to Miller for the final run of the game in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Lily Amos.

Madie Aughinbaugh and Taffet each reached base twice, the former on a single and walk, the latter on a pair of knocks. Aughinbaugh also tallied a steal.

In game two, Fresno State struck for five runs in both the second and third, with all runs in the second being unearned. Aughinbaugh got the first two batters out but the second was able to reach on a passed ball. That sparked a rally with a walk, three straight singles, and a double, before the senior was able to get her third strikeout of the inning. Two errors in the third led to five runs, four earned. A three-run home run was the final blow. The Rams made a rally in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs but the Bulldogs were able to strike out two before Aughinbaugh drove in a run with a hit by pitch.

Fordham will wrap up play in California against Saint Mary's tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET.
