Bronx, N.Y. – (January 13, 2020) – It took some time for Fordham's
Joergen Oland, but it finally happened on Monday afternoon, as the senior defender was selected in the fourth round (94
th overall) by the Portland Timbers for the MLS SuperDraft 2020 presented by adidas.
Oland was one of three Atlantic 10 players selected in the four-round draft, joining VCU's Ryo Shimazaki (3
rd round – Columbus) and URI's Stavros Zarokostas (3
rd round – NYRB)
Oland becomes the fifth Ram to be taken in the MLS Superdraft, joining his former teammates,
Janos Loebe and
Rashid Nuhu, who were both drafted in 2019, while Ryan Meara was picked in 2012, and John Wolyniec was a first round selection (7
th overall) by the then-NY/NJ MetroStars in 1999.
Oland repeated as the Atlantic 10's Defensive Player of the Year this past season, joining Anthony Manning (Saint Louis – 2013 & 2014) and Patrick Hannigan (Temple – 2003 & 2004) as the only players to win the award twice, as well as in consecutive years. Oland's award marked the third consecutive year that a Fordham player has been named Defensive Player of the Year, which began with Matthew Lewis in 2017, and the fourth time overall (Ryan Meara – 2011).
A two-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 performer, he also was a Third Team All-Southeast Region pick by United Soccer Coaches and an All-ECAC selection in 2019. Oland led the Fordham defense to a 1.08 team goals against average and seven shutouts. He also contributed on the offensive end, adding four goals and one assist for nine points, which was good for second on the team in goals and points.
