Men’s Soccer Opens Four-Match Road Trip on Tuesday

Rams Take on Stony Brook and Rhode Island This Week

Bronx, N.Y. – (September 30, 2019) – Following its dramatic double overtime win on Saturday, the Fordham men's soccer team looks to carry that momentum on to the road, as the Rams begin a four-match road swing this week.  Fordham starts the road swing at Stony Brook on Tuesday night, while playing at Rhode Island on Saturday night.

The Rams (3-5-1, 2-0 A-10) head to Stony Brook (2-6-1) after defeating St. Bonaventure, 1-0, in double overtime on a last second goal by Luca Fava.  The Seawolves enter Tuesday's contest having lost its last three games, the last against Vermont by a 1-0 decision.  On Saturday, it is another edition of the "Battle of the Rams". Rhode Island (4-3-2, 1-1 A10) is off to a 1-1 start in defense of their Atlantic 10 Championship, defeating George Washington, while falling to Saint Louis.

SERIES HISTORY: On Tuesday, it will be only the fourth ever meeting between Fordham and Stony Brook with the Seawolves going 2-0-1.  Stony Brook's wins came in the 2012 and 2013 seasons, while last year, the two squads played to a 90-minute scoreless draw.  The match was called after 90 minutes due to lightning.

For Saturday's match, it is the 27th meeting between Fordham and Rhode Island.  In recent years, it has been an important game in the build up to the league championship.  The two teams have gone on to win the Atlantic 10 Championship in three of the last five years.   Last year, Fordham won the regular season meeting, 4-2, but Rhode Island got the win in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals, 2-0.

LAST TIME OUT: So far in 2019, the Fordham men's soccer team has had a flair for dramatic with five of their eight games going into overtime.  On Saturday, the Rams made it six out of nine and got their second overtime win this season in Atlantic 10 play, a 1-0 decision over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at Jack Coffey Field, as Luca Fava headed home the game-winning goal with 4.1 seconds left in the game.

After a scoreless first half, the game changed in the 47th minute, when St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Trevor Wilson fouled a Fordham player as the last defender to goal and was red carded, leaving the Bonnies down a player for the rest of the game.

The Rams threw everything at the backup netminder Kyle Cunningham, but Cunningham made all the saves he was called upon to handle in the second half, pushing the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Rams looked to have gotten a game-winning goal on a shot by Luca Fava that got past Cunningham, but the ball hit the right post and glanced out, keeping the game scoreless into a second overtime session.

Fava would not be denied though in the second overtime session, converting in the final seconds.  Bart Dziedzic played a corner kick toward the far side of the six-yard box, where Fava headed home his first goal of the season into the right side of the net with 4.1 seconds left on the clock.

In net, Fordham's Konstantin Weis had two saves to earn his second shutout of the season, while Cunningham ended with seven for the Bonnies in 63 minutes of work.  Wilson had three saves in the first 47 minutes.

TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: After scoring just twice in the first four games of the season, the Fordham Rams have picked up the action in the last five, totaling 11 goals, which included a season-high five against Holy Cross on September 14th.  That was Fordham's first five-goal game since October 12th, 2016 against Duquesne.  From those 11 goals, seven different Rams have found the net, with Joergen Oland leading the way with three of those markers.

WHO'S NEXT: Following this week's games, the Rams finish their four-match road trip with games at Seton Hall on October 8th and at Massachusetts on October 12th.
