Men’s Tennis Wins Pair of Matches

Rams down St. Francis and Baruch by Identical 7-0 scores

Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis squad had a busy Sunday, playing two matches in two different locations. But the Rams won both matches, defeating St. Francis (NY) College and Baruch College by identical 7-0 scores.
 
In the first match of the day, Fordham hosted St. Francis at Adelphi University on Long Island. The Rams opened play by winning both completed doubles matches. Fabian Mauritzson and Allen Thornes did not lose a set to Stefan Gmijovic and Pablo Blasco-Torres at first singles, winning 6-0, but Max Green and Finn Kemper had to play an extra set at the second position to defeat Tomas Dirube and Facundo Couso, 7-5.
 
The Rams then swept all six singles matches, five in straight sets. Mauritzson handled Dirube at first singles, 6-2 and 6-1, while at number three Lutwin de Macar defeated Gmijovic, 6-1 and 6-1. At the fourth spot, Alex Makatsaria upended Pablo Blasco-Torres, 6-1, 6-0, and at fifth singles Jofre Segarra pulled out a 6-0, 6-2 win over Grant Louis and Steven Duka took sixth singles from Daniel Blasco, 6-3, 6-2.
 
At second singles, Kemper dropped the first set to Facundo Couso 7-6 (3), but came back to take the second, 6-3, and the tiebreaker, 10-8.
 
In the second match of the day, the Rams played in familiar settings, defeating Baruch on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts.
 
Fordham swept doubles play with Mauritzson and Allen Thornes taking first doubles from Abhinav Srivastava and Leonard Margolis, 6-3, Makatsaria and de Macar winning at the second spot over Alberto Beyebach and Hudson Kaylie, 6-1, and Segarra and Duka completing the sweep with a 6-1 win over Michael Dozortsev and Clement Lacoudre.
 
The Rams then won all six singles matches in straight sets. Max Green covered first singles for Fordham with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Srivastava while Segarra dropped Margolis at number two, 6-2, 6-2. At third singles, Jeremy Chung was victorious over Michael Dozortsev, 6-3, 6-2, and Thornes won at the fourth spot over Beyebach, 6-1, 6-1. Duka didn't lose a set to Kaylie at fifth singles, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Gabriel Mashaal was victorious over Andrew Givelechian at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-0.
 
The Rams return to action on Saturday, April 13, as they host the Siena College Saints on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts at 12:00 p.m.
