Philadelphia, Pa. – The Fordham men's tennis team joined their women's counterpart today at Saint Joseph's but unlike the distaff side the men played a close match, squeaking by the Hawks, 4-3, at the SJU Tennis Courts.
The match opened with Fordham taking the doubles point, winning two the three matches. Fabian Mauritzson and
Allen Thornes opened things with a 6-3 win over Beekman Schaeffer and Dan Tan at first singles but the Hawks won third singles as Andre Fick and Johnnie Massart defeated
Lutwin de Macar and
Alex Makatsaria, 6-3. The doubles point came down to the second spot where
Max Green and
Finn Kemper got by Nathan Perrone and Eshan Kanetkar, 6-4.
Makatsaria gave Fordham a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kanetkar at fifth singles before the Hawks took first singles to make a 2-1 match.
At fourth singles, de Macar upended Tan in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3, but Saint Joseph's took the sixth spot to trail the Rams 3-2.
But
Finn Kemper then clinched the match for the Rams, taking down Massart at third singles, winning the first match 6-2, before dropping the second, 6-4. Kemper rebounded to win the third set easily, 6-0.
The Rams return to action for a pair of matches on Sunday, April 7, as they take on St. Francis (NY) at 10:00 a.m. at Adelphi University and then face Baruch College in the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts at 3:00 p.m.
