Angelika Szumilo Named Head Coach at Fairleigh Dickinson

Szumilo Has Spent the Past Eight Years as Associate Head Coach under Coach Gaitley

FDU Release

Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham women's basketball associate head coach Angelika Szumilo has been named the head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University, effective immediately, the school announced today. Szumilo has spent the past eight seasons in the same role under head coach Stephanie Gaitley and has spent 16 total years under her at Monmouth and LIU Brooklyn, as well, the latter also as a student-athlete.

"It is a great honor to be selected as the next head women's basketball coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University.  I am humbled, grateful and excited for this opportunity to serve the student-athletes, the athletic department, the University, and the FDU community," Szumilo said, "I would like to thank athletic director, Bradford Hurlbut, senior woman administrator, Cathy Liggett, and the rest of the search committee for their confidence in me to lead this program. I think that FDU is an incredible place that has a lot to offer both on and off the court and I can't wait to roll up my sleeves and get to work! I am excited to meet the team and begin to build relationships that will create strong foundation of a successful program. Having played and coached in the NEC for 11 years, I believe with my whole heart that we can establish a winning culture and win at FDU! My husband and my two boys are thrilled to be a part of the Knights family!"

In eight seasons at Fordham, Szumilo and the Rams have won two Atlantic 10 championships and made two NCAA Tournament appearances, competed in the WNIT on four occasions, and record six 20-win seasons, including three with 25 or more. This past year, the Rams went 25-9 overall, set a school record with a 13-3 conference record, earned a share of the program's first-ever regular season crown, and won a second A-10 title.

Szumilo has served as the recruiting coordinator with the Rams, helping recruit and coach four First Team All-Conference players, four Second Team members, three All-Rookie selections, and one Defensive Player of the Year. She has also worked closely with the guards and handled budgetary and compliance needs for the team.

"I can't begin to tell you how excited I am for Ang," Gaitley said, "She has worked so hard for this opportunity. It is a bittersweet moment as we have been together for 16 years. Ang had success as a player and assistant coach in the NEC – no doubt she will reach those levels as a head coach. Ang, Rafal, Krystian, and Daniel will always remain a part of the Fordham family!"

Prior to arriving in the Bronx, Szumilo coached under Gaitley at Monmouth for three years, getting promoted to associate head coach before the final season, and at LIU Brooklyn, her alma mater, for five seasons. Szumilo helped the Blackbirds win the 2001 Northeast Conference championship as a sophomore.
