Queens, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis squad remained unbeaten on Saturday night with a 5-2 win over nationally-ranked Queens College in a match played at Queens College.
The Rams started strong, winning all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point against the top-50 division II squad, which is ranked second in the East Region.
Jofre Segarra and
Allen Thornes got it going with a 6-1 win over Hugo Evangelista and Stanislas Bedrune at third doubles before
Finn Kemper and
Max Green defeated Copiis Subera and Richard Sec at first doubles, 6-4. Fabian Mauritzson and
Lutwin de Macar completed the doubles sweep with a 7-5 (3) win over Kareem Rashad and Jose Zurro at the second position.
Queens came out strong in singles play, winning quickly at #1 and #6 to go up 2-1 and the Knights took the first set at #2 and #4 but the Rams battled back.
Lutwin de Macar gave Fordham's its first singles win, dropping the first set at fourth singles to Zurro, 4-6, before coming back to win the next two 6-1 and 6-1.
Kemper then gave the Rams a 3-2 lead with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, win over Sec at third singles and Mauritzson clinched the match for Fordham, taking sets two and three, 6-3 and 7-5, after falling 6-1 in the first set to Rashad at second singles.
Alex Makatsaria had to work overtime in both sets with Evangelista at fifth singles but came out in front, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).
The Rams (3-0) return to action on Saturday, February 9, as they travel down to Philadelphia to face the University of Pennsylvania at 2:30 p.m.
