Men’s Tennis Defeats Hofstra, 5-2

Rams take four of six singles matches

Harrison, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis squad improved to 5-1 in the young spring season with a 5-2 win over Hofstra at Life Time Fitness on Friday night.

The Rams opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of three doubles matches. Lutwin de Macar and Fabian Mauritzson got things started for the Rams with a 6-2 win over Giacomo Pezzoli and Julien Wolfe at second doubles before Jofre Segarra and Steven Duka dropped third doubles to Hofstra's Marcus Smith and Jan Leithner, 7-5. But Finn Kemper and Max Green defeated Coco Haener and Shawn Jackson, 6-4, at the first position to win the point for Fordham.

The Rams then took four of the six singles matches for the win, though it wasn't easy as the Rams dropped the first set on four courts but came back to win two. Jackson defeated de Macar in straight sets at second singles, 6-2 and 6-3, before Green made it 2-1 for Fordham with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Haener at third singles.

Kemper put the Rams up 3-1 with a straight set win over Pezzoli at the fourth position, 6-4 and 6-4 but Segarra fell at sixth singles to Wolfe, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. Alex Makatsaria clinched the match for the Rams with a win over Jan Leithner at fifth singles. Makatsaria dropped the first set, 6-2, but came back to take the next two, 6-2 and 6-4.

Mauritzson dropped the first set of first singles to Smith, 6-1, but rebounded to win the final two sets by an identical 7-5 score to give Fordham the 5-2 win.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, February 23, as they travel to Providence, R.I., to take on the Brown University Bears at 1:00 p.m.
