Swimming & Diving Kicks Off Season by Sweeping Meet Against Manhattan

Bullock, Stegen, Perez, & Wilson Each Win Multiple Events for the Rams

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 18, 2019) – The Fordham swimming & diving team began its 2019-20 season on Friday night by sweeping a dual meet from Manhattan College at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.  The Fordham women defeated the Jaspers, 173-63, while the men took home a 144-92 win.
 
The Rams ended up with four multi-event winners, three of which came in the men's competition.  Newcomer Josh Stegen posted wins in the 100 (47.30) and 200 (1:42.54) freestyle events, while fellow newcomer Patrick Wilson took the top spot in the 50 freestyle (21.59) and the 100 breaststroke (58.12).  Diego Perez was the final multi-event winner for the men, winning both diving events with scores of 221.25 (1M) and 209.40 (3M).
 
Other men's winners included Spencer Clarke in the 200 IM (1:56.28), Casey Sawyer in the 100 butterfly (51.81), and Ethan Murray in the 500 freestyle in 4:48.69.
 
In men's relay action, the 400 medley team of Clarke, Wilson, Christopher Sleutjes, and Stegen, won in a time of 3:30.53, while the 400 freestyle squad of A.J. Frakes, Sean Finlay, Sleutjes, and Murray finished first in 3:16.80.

On the women's side, Amelia Bullock was the lone multi-event winner, as the Rams won all 13 events on the evening.  Bullock placed first in the 100 butterfly (55.46) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.55). 
 
Aside from Bullock, other event winners were Chloe Mitchell in the 1000 freestyle (10:41.40), Clare Culver in the 200 freestyle (1:53.38), Michelle Martin in the 50 freestyle (24.49), Vaula Vekkeli in the 200 IM (2:08.01), Molly Dunn in the one-meter dive (257.48), Theresa Mullen in the 100 freestyle (53.31), Alison Lin in the 100 backstroke (58.64), Caitlin McNary in the 500 freestyle (5:04.66), and Natalie Ortof in the three-meter dive (227.48).
 
In the relays, Martin, Bullock, Hannah McGee, and Mullen were first in the 400 medley in 3:51.81, with the team of Samantha McDonald, Catherine Alabanza, Mitchell, and Kiara Norris taking first in the 400 freestyle in 3:39.49.
 
The Fordham swimming & diving team will next be in action on Thursday, October 24th, when the Rams travel to Marist for a 6:00 PM meet.
