Men’s Soccer Hosts Saint Joseph’s in Saturday Showdown

Rams Look to Keep Pace in the A-10 Standings as Stretch Run Begins

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 18, 2019) – Following a win at Massachusetts last Saturday, the Fordham men's soccer team returns home at Jack Coffey Field this Saturday, as the Rams host the Saint Joseph's Hawks for a 7:00 PM match.

The Rams (4-8-1, 3-1 A-10) are near the top of the Atlantic 10 standings with nine points, which is tied for fourth with Duquesne and George Mason.  Saint Louis holds the top spot with 15 points, followed by VCU and Rhode Island with 12.  The Hawks (4-9-1, 0-4 A-10) are still looking for their first A-10 win of the season with only four games left on the slate prior to the conference championship.  Saint Joseph's is led by Leon Maric, who has a team-best four goals and nine points on the year, while in net Joseph Boehm has played all but 19 minutes this season, registering 64 saves and two shutouts.

SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 21st all-time meeting between Fordham and Saint Joseph's with the Rams holding a 12-6-2 edge in the series.  The Hawks closed the gap last season, as they picked up a 3-2 overtime win in Philadelphia.  Fordham's last win came in 2017.

LAST TIME OUT: Fordham's Sameer Fathazada netted the lone goal of the contest, while the Fordham defense gave up only two shots on goal, as the Rams shut out the Massachusetts Minutemen, 1-0, at Rudd Field in Amherst, Mass.

The Rams seemed in control from the start, got the lone goal of the contest in the 12th minute.  After a foul call against the Minutemen, Sameer Fathazada lined off a free kick from 25 yards and beat the goalkeeper inside the post for his second of the season.

The Fordham defense and goalkeeper Konstantin Weis were able to make that one goal hold up, limiting the Minutemen to only two shots on goal for the game.  Weis came up with a pair of saves, and was involved in a number of scoring changes in other fashions, either punching the ball out of the box or catching a cross on a Massachusetts opportunity.

Fathazada and Tomer Zloczower each had three shots to lead the offense for the Rams.

CLIMBING THE RANKS: Senior defender Joergen Oland is on the verge of cracking the top ten in both games played and games started at Fordham.   He has started all 71 games he has appeared in at Rose Hill, netting 15 goals and two assists for 32 points in his career.  He is two games started shy of Rashid Nuhu (73) for tenth place on Fordham's all-time list and three games played shy of cracking that top ten list.

WHO'S NEXT: Following Saturday's game, the Rams have a pair of Atlantic 10 matches next week.  Fordham travels to VCU on Wednesday, October 23rd, while hosting George Mason on Saturday, October 26th for Senior Day.
