Harrison, N.Y. – The Fordham University men's tennis squad opened its spring season on a positive note, defeating La Salle University, 5-2, at Life Time Athletic on Saturday night.
Fordham opened the match by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three doubles matches. After
Max Green and
Finn Kemper fell at first doubles to Francesco Mowrey and Nassim Fenjiro, 7-5, the Rams took second and third doubles with both going to a tiebreaker.
Fabian Hansch Mauritzson and
Lutwin de Macar won at second doubles over Connor Merrill and Rogelio Gonzalez, 7-6 (7-4), while
Allen Thornes and
Jofre Segarra were victorious at third doubles over Aandrija Bozovic and Colin Lucius, 7-6 (7-3).
The Rams then won the match by taking four of the six singles matches.
Alex Makatsaria got things started with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Patrick Pascual and then Kemper made it 3-0 for Fordham with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Fenjiro at the fourth spot.
Green clinched the match for Fordham when he upended Merrill at second singles, 6-3 and 6-2, but the Explorers got on the board when Mourey defeated Mauritzson at first singles, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 10-5 and then Gonzalez knocked off de Macer at the third spot, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Thornes closed out the match with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-3 win over Lucius at sixth singles.
The Rams return to action on Friday, February 1, as they take on Fairfield University at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
