Bronx, N.Y. – (September 23, 2018) – The Fordham water polo team hosted a pair of home conference matches on Sunday, but could not come out on the right end in either, falling to George Washington, 14-7, and to Navy, 9-8, at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.
With the two losses, Fordham is now 4-10 on the year, 0-4 in MAWPC competition.
In the opening game of the day, George Washington used a six-goal spurt in the second quarter to pull away from Fordham for a 14-7 win.
For Fordham,
Samuel Varshisky and
Jake Miller-Tolt each had a pair of goals while
Magnus Sims,
Dimitris Koukias, and
Diego Delgado rounded out the scoring.
Patrick Coffey made five saves in just under three quarters of work, while
Bailey O'Mara had three saves.
In game two, Navy outscored Fordham 5-4 in the second half to pull out a 9-8 victory.
For closed to within one, 8-7 on a penalty shot goal by Miller-Tolt with 4:28 remaining in the fourth quarter. However, Crawford Smith scored with three minutes left to put Navy back up by two. The Rams would get a goal with 15 seconds left to pull back within one, but could not get possession as the game ended in favor of the Midshipmen.
For Fordham, Miller-Tolt netted five goals, while
Magnus Sims had two and
Ian Watson had one. Coffey made five saves over the first three quarters of action with O'Mara coming in with two saves in the fourth.
The Fordham water polo team will next be in action, October 4-6, as they head for the West Coast and the Gary Troyer Tournament in California.
