New York, N.Y. – The Fordham women's tennis team continued their fall season at the Columbia Invitational this weekend.
The tournament included six singles draws named after each of New York's five boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Bronx, and Manhattan, along with Westchester. There were also three doubles draws A, B and C.
The top performer for the Rams was
Whitney Weisberg who defeated Hofstra's Ana Canahuate-Torres 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals of the Westchester draw before falling to LIU Brooklyn's Ana Leonte 6-0, 6-2 in the finals.
After losing her opening round match,
Maia Balce defeated Hofstra's Alejandra Ruffini 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 in the consolation semifinals of the Manhattan draw and bested LIU's Sasha Bollweg 6-7 (4), 6-3, 14-12 in the finals.
In the Queens draw,
Gianna Insogna bounced back from an opening round loss to defeat Hofstra's Sarah Catherine-Herndon 6-7 (3), 6-3, 10-7 in the consolation finals.
In the Staten Island draw, after dropping the opening match
Nicole Li rallied to defeat Hofstra's Hailey Feuer 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals and Hofstra's Ronia Dolabany 6-4, 6-1 in the finals.
In the B doubles draw, Balce and Insogna defeated St. John's Solis and Goribal 8-5 in the quarterfinals before falling to Columbia 8-5 in the semifinals. Balce/Insogna also defeated LIU's Gogova/Leysen, who went on to win the C doubles draw, 8-5 in an extra match.
In the C doubles draw, Li and Weisberg defeated Harvard's Chelsea Williams and LIU's Clemence Krug 8-5 in the quarterfinals before falling to Columbia in the semifinals.
In the A doubles draw,
Tatiana Grigoryan and
Arina Taluyenko rallied from an opening round loss to defeat Hofstra 8-7 (5) in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
The Rams return to action September 28-30 at the West Point Invitational.
