Davidson, N.C. – (March 24, 2018) – Battling through rain and sleet during the game, Fordham's
Ben Greenberg allowed just one earned run over seven innings of work, while
Matt Tarabek had four hits offensively, as the Rams topped the Davidson Wildcats, 5-2, at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Fordham improved to 11-7-1 on the year, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Davidson fell to 15-7 overall, 1-1 in the league.
The Wildcats struck first in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a Fordham error, which loaded the bases. Alex Mardiney then came up with a two-run single to left for a 2-0 lead.
The score stayed that way until the sixth, when Fordham struck for three runs for a 3-2 lead.
Alvin Melendez drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single by
Matt Tarabek. After a foul out,
Nick Labella drove an RBI-single to left to score Melendez, cutting the Fordham deficit in half.
Jake MacKenzie then tripled to right center, scoring Tarabek and Labella.
Fordham added to the lead in the seventh, loading the bases on a walk, a hit and an error, with Labella drawing a walk to force in Melendez from third for a 4-2 lead.
Jake MacKenzie had a two-run triple in the sixth inning.
The Rams made it 5-2 in the ninth, as Melendez hit a ground ball to third, which the throw bounced away from the first baseman and into foul territory. Melendez ended up at third on the play and then scored on a wild pitch.
From there,
Brian Weissert closed out the win for Fordham with two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts to record his first career save. Greenberg (3-0) was outstanding as he battled the brunt of the bad weather, allowing one earned run on five hits over seven innings of work with three strikeouts.
At the plate, Tarabek was 4-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Labella and MacKenzie each had a hit and two RBI. C.J Vazquez also went 2-for-3 with Melendez scoring three runs to go with a stolen base.
The same two teams match up for the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
