Women’s Soccer Rallies Twice to Tie UConn, 2-2

Juliana Mascelli and Milan Bornstein Net Goals for the Rams

Bronx, N.Y. – After seeing just one shot on goal in the first half, the Fordham-UConn women's soccer match turned into a frenzy for the rest of the game with four goals scored, countless chances, and big defensive plays, leaving the game as a 2-2 draw at Jack Coffey Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the tie, Fordham moves to 2-2-3, while UConn is now 2-3-2.

After only one shot on goal in the first half, the frantic offense started in the 50th minute, when UConn scored the first goal of the game. Hiedi Druehl played a long through ball to Kess Elmore, who then connected on a shot from 18 yards out, just inside the left post for her fourth goal of the season.

The lead didn't last long, as Fordham tied the game in the 54th minute.  After a foul, Brooke Salmon took a free kick, 13 yards shy of the midfield stripe.  Her long ball found Juliana Mascelli at the top of the box, who one-touched the ball and took a shot just out of the keeper's reach to net her second goal of the season.

The Huskies went back on top in the 63rd minute, as

Melia Couzis found Elmore with a cross, who connected on her second goal of the game inside the right post from eight yards out.

Fordham would not go away, tying the game again in the 68th minute.  Crea Baker-Durante played a ball across the field out wide to Milan Bornstein. Bornstein collected the ball from 15 yards out and tucked in her first career goal off the right post and in, knotting the game at two.

The game would flow into overtime, which almost ended in the 99th minute.  UConn got a cross into the box 10 yards from the goal.  Fordham goalkeeper Kelly LaMorte came out, but a UConn player got a head on the cross, sending it toward the goal.  However, Margaret Roughley was able to clear the ball prior to it going over the line to keep the game tied.

In the second overtime session, the Huskies had one more opportunity on a shot by Tanya Altrui, but LaMorte came up with the save to complete the 2-2 draw.

LaMorte finished with five saves in the game for Fordham, while Mollie Kerrigan made one for UConn.

The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, September 15th, when the Rams host Columbia at 7:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
