Women's Basketball Signs Johanna Klug to NLI

German International Forward Brings Class of 2021 to Six Members

Bronx, N.Y. – Stephanie Gaitley and the Fordham women's basketball program have announced today one addition to their 2017 recruiting class: 6'3 German international forward Johanna Klug. She joins Halei Gillis, Kendell Heremaia, Zara Jillings, Ralene Kwiatkowski, and Vilisi Tavui in the Class of 2021.

"We are excited to welcome Joey and her family into the Fordham family," Gaitley said, "Her size and versatility will be a great addition to our rotation."

Much like Heremaia, Jillings, and Tavui, Klug is a fixture for her country's youth international squads, competing for Germany since the 2013 U16 European Championship as a 15 year-old all the way to her participation in last July's FIBA U20 European Championship in Matosinhos, Portugal, a tournament that also featured current Ram and Latvian international, Kate Kreslina.

The Nördlingen native has also been a member of TH Wohnbau Angels since 2013 in Germany's first division, the Damen-Basketball Bundesliga (DBBL), where she averaged 1.7 points across 9.3 minutes in 15 games this past season, alongside former Massachusetts Minutewoman Kim Pierre-Louis. She has featured more predominantly, however, with the Angels' juniors team, TSV Nördlingen, of which she was captain from 2014 to 2015, helping them to the Regionalliga title in 2016.

Klug won gold with the German U16 team in Division B of the FIBA Women's European Championship in 2014, held in Tallinn, Estonia, averaging 7.5 points and 5.6 rebounds (2.9 offensive) across 21.5 minutes in all eight contests. Klug played a tournament-high 30 minutes in the win over the Netherlands in the semi-finals, posting 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting with five rebounds, four coming on the offensive glass, with two steals. Against England in the finals, Klug struggled with foul trouble to post only three points but did grab five rebounds, three offensive, and notched a tournament-high three steals, as well, in 17 minutes.

A year later, Klug helped Germany to a fifth-place showing in the 2015 U18 Euros, averaging 10.4 points and 4.9 rebounds. She had her best game in Germany's penultimate contest against Denmark, tallying 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting with five rebounds, again four coming on the offensive end, and two assists.

Klug had a busy July last summer, first helping the U20s to 16th at the Euros in Matosinhos from July 9 to 17, averaging 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds across 15.2 minutes of all seven contests, before helping the U18s to a seventh-place finish in Sarajevo in the second half of the month. Klug averaged 8.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in 22.4 minutes per game, including a double-double against Greece in the quarterfinals, 12 points and 11 rebounds, plus two steals and one block, in a tournament-high 33 minutes, and one near double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds in 29 minutes in a win over Bulgaria in group play.
