Newport News, Va. – The Fordham women's basketball program swept this week's Atlantic 10 awards, it was announced Monday, with
G'mrice Davis being named Player of the Week for the second week in a row and
Kate Kreslina earning Rookie of the Week honors. These are the second career honors for each player. The pair have been instrumental in the team's 13-5 (4-0 A-10) start to the season and RPI rank (86
th).
Â
"I'm happy that our kids were recognized for their individual efforts, but like I always say, through team success, individuals get attention," Head coach
Stephanie Gaitley said.
Â
This is G'mrice's second straight award after sharing the honor with Saint Louis' Sadie Stipanovich a week ago. Davis has been a force all season long and is a large reason why Fordham remains unbeaten in conference play. She has found her groove recently with five straight double-doubles (of 10 overall) and achieved yet another new career-high, with 27 points against Davidson on Wednesday night. Over two wins in the past seven days, the junior forward averaged 20.5 points and 13.5 rebounds on 58.1% shooting (18-of-31) plus 2.0 steals, 1.0 assists, and 0.5 blocks across 37.0 minutes.
Â
Against the Wildcats in the Bronx last Wednesday night, Davis hit a career-best 11 field goals on 17 attempts (64.7%) and powered Fordham to its third straight win, this time a 13-point victory, 85-72. The Philly native added two assists and two steals while playing nearly every minute of the game, only coming out in the final seconds of the first half. On Saturday at George Mason, Davis was consistently around the rim, finishing 7-of-14 for 14 points to go with 14 rebounds, a block, and another pair of steals over 35 minutes.
Â
Davis now has 10 games with at least 13 rebounds, 13 with at least 10, and 15 with nine or more. She is second in all of Division I in rebounds (223), rebounds per game (12.4), and defensive rebounds per game (10.0).
Â
"G put together two impressive games that were instrumental to our success." said Gaitley.
Â
Kate Kreslina missed three games and several days of practice due to illness but slotted right back into the starting lineup for two conference wins this past week, making it 15 straight starts to begin her collegiate career.=. The redshirt freshman showed no signs of rust in the 13-point win over Davidson in midweek, notching 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-2 makes from deep, to go with three rebounds, two assists, and a steal across 32 minutes. At George Mason on Saturday afternoon, Kreslina played only 21 minutes but was terrific down the stretch, with a clutch layup late with the game tied, 46-46, taking on her defender at the top of the key and beating her to the rim, then hitting 3-of-4 free throws to put the game out of reach.
Â
For the week, Kreslina averaged 11.5 points on 8-of-13 shooting (61.5%) with 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists. The versatile Latvian is averaging 9.5 points per game this season on an efficient 45.0% from the field, and 38.1% from beyond the arc, best among players averaging 16 or more minutes in the squad, and top-15 in both categories in the A-10. She is also fourth on the team with 28 assists despite playing three fewer games.
Â
"It was great having Kate back on the court. It was impressive what she was able to accomplish after being out for a week. I believe her best basketball is ahead of her." Gaitley added.
Â
Fordham is back in action this Wednesday afternoon when Richmond visits the Rose Hill Gym during the team's annual Field Trip Day.
