Lauren Quense and
Lindsay Mayer combined to allow just four baserunners in a one-hit shutout as the Fordham softball team defeated Lehigh, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon in nonconference action. With the win, the Rams improve to 22-15 on the season and have now won six straight and 13 of their last 15. The Mountain Hawks fall to 22-8 overall.
Against 2015 Patriot League First Team selection Christine Campbell, the Rams offense could only muster three hits and a walk over four innings but wisely did all of their damage in a small ball second inning. Mayer singled through the left side for the game's first hit but was thrown out at second as reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week
Madison Shaw grounded into a fielder's choice.
Cailin Winokur was hit by a pitch and
Ally Vergona reached on a fielder's choice when Campbell opted to get the lead runner, Shaw, out at third.
Chelsea Skrepenak walked to load the bases in a nine-pitch at bat and
Morgan Figueroa beat out a slow-hopping grounder to shortstop to get the game-winning run in.
From that point on, each team only tallied one hit. Mayer relieved Quense in the fifth inning and threw two nearly perfect innings with one walk and three strikeouts for the team's first save of the year. It is also the second combined shutout of the year for the Rams.
Quense improves to 9-6 on the year, while Campbell falls to 12-4.
The Rams host St. Bonaventure tomorrow, April 6, for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Bahoshy Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
