Gillen Leads Softball to Win Over Iowa State to Salvage Final Game at Mercer

Rams Rally to Finish 1-4 at Mercer's Orange & Black Challenge

MACON, Ga. -- Graduate student Rachel Gillen tossed a complete game in the circle and slugged a three-run homer in the top of the fourth, which proved to be the game winner, as the Fordham softball team salvaged its final game of Mercer's Orange & Black Challenge Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Iowa State to snap a four-game losing streak. With the win, the Rams improve to 7-13 on the season, while the Cyclones fall to 11-8 overall.

Iowa State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third with a RBI single to take a 1-0 lead, before Gillen delivered her first home run of the season in the top of the fourth. With one out, junior Lindsay Mayer worked a walk on a full count, and sophomore Madison Shaw reached when she was plunked on a 0-2 pitch. Gillen then stepped to the plate and hit the first pitch she saw over the right field fence to give Fordham the lead for good, 3-1.

After the Cyclones got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out solo home run, the Rams quickly went back to work in the top of the sixth, as they scored two more times to make the final score 5-2. Junior Sydney Canessa led off the inning with her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot over the fence in left center field. Gillen then reached on an error with two outs, before being lifted for pinch runner Jordana Storm, who advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score when junior Lauren Quense reached on an error.

Gillen was able to pitch around trouble in the bottom of the sixth and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to clinch the victory. Gillen (5-8) scattered five hits, allowed two earned runs, walked two and did not record a strikeout en route recording her eighth complete game of the season. Four different players recorded a hit on offense.

Fordham returns to action next weekend, March 12-13, when it starts its home season with the Fordham Tournament at Bahoshy Field. The Rams will play Providence at 12 p.m. and Saint Peter's at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 12, before playing the Friars at 2 p.m. and the Peacocks at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 13.
