Swimming & Diving Opens Busy Weekend With Tri-Meet Sweep of Monmouth & Fairfield

McBride, Magsino, Espina-Esquivel, Feneron, and Polaha Win Multiple Events on Friday Night

Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham swimming & diving team started a busy weekend of work on Friday night, hosting both Monmouth and Fairfield at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.  The Rams came out on the plus side in all four match-ups, as the men won 189.5-75.5 over Monmouth and 182-100 over Fairfield, while the women defeated Monmouth, 191-66, and Fairfield, 170-107.
 
Both Fordham teams improved to 3-0 on the season.
 
Fordham took the top spot in all 16 men's events, while finishing first in 14 of 16 events in the women's competition.
 
On the men's side, Isiah Magsino led the way with a pair of event wins in the 100 (1:01.93) and 200 (2:12.22) breaststroke events, while joining Travis Monahan, Matt Luther, and Joe Mercurio to win the 200 medley relay in 1:35.45.

Twelve other Rams won an event on Friday night, which included Grant Durner (1000 free – 10:11.52), Chris Viera (200 free – 1:45.76), Joseph Vizza (100 back – 53.37), Christopher Sleutjes (200 fly – 1:57.36), Mercurio (50 free – 21.64), Christopher Craig (1M – 239.40), Liam Semple (100 free – 48.30), Connor Griffin (200 back – 1:59.61), Monahan (500 free – 4:48.56), Robert Simkins (100 fly – 53.92), Colin Esterine-Reid (3M – 248.70), and Greg Lombana (400 IM – 4:11.86). 
 
The event win was the 200 freestyle relay team of Monahan, Viera, Jack Madigan, and Mercurio, which took first in 1:26.00.

In the women's events, the Rams had four multiple event winners, beginning with Erin McBride taking first in the 1000 freestyle in 10:37.52 and the 100 freestyle in 53.64 seconds, while Megan Polaha earned the top spot in the 100 backstroke (59.46) and the 500 freestyle (5:12.76).  Wendy Espina-Esquivel scored first in both diving competitions, netting scores of 298.50 (1M) and 275.33 (3M), with Marie Feneron taking home first in the 200 backstroke (2:10.28) and the 400 IM (4:35.61).
 
Other individual winners on Friday included Chloe Mitchell in the 200 freestyle (1:53.82), Catherine Alabanza in the 200 butterfly (2:08.16), Tara Brunner in the 50 freestyle (24.34), and Kalena Laurent in the 100 butterfly (58.16).
 
In relay action, the 200 medley relay of Morgan Fairclough, Gabrielle Celia, Amelia Bullock, and Brunner won their event in 1:48.15, while the 200 freestyle relay of Theresa Mullen, Samantha McDonald, Fairclough, and McBride was first in 1:40.22.
 
The Rams are right back in action on Saturday, October 29th, when the Rams host Boston University at 1:00 PM.
