Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham University Athletics is saddened today by the loss of former men's basketball Ram and Hall of Famer, John Brady, who passed away on Friday in Pompton Plains, N.J. He was 78.

A smooth scorer and a strong rebounder, Brady averaged 15 points and 5 rebounds a game in his three years as a Fordham varsity basketball player. He finished his career third on the all-time scoring list with 1,119 points, a total good for 24th place on the current list. In his junior year, Brady averaged 14.7 points per game as a started on the 1957-58 Fordham team that went 16-9 and advanced to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). As a senior captain, Brady averaged 14.7 points per game and led the Rams to a 17-8 record and helped bring the Rams to their second consecutive NIT berth.

A New York City native, Brady grew up in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. He attended Manhattan Prep High School, earning All City Honors on the court.

Following graduation from Fordham in 1959, Brady went on to have a long and successful career with NY Telephone Co., retiring as district manager.Â

Brady was inducted into Fordham's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990 and routinely made the trip from his home in Pompton Plains, N.J., to the Bronx to attend Fordham men's basketball games. For his spirit, loyalty and friendship to the Fordham basketball program, Brady was also honored with the 2015 Posse Award, named in honor of Michael J. Armstrong (FCLC '90) who was killed on 9/11, last winter.

M. John Scanlan Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am on Tuesday at
Our Lady of Good Counsel RC Church, Pompton Plains, N.J. Burial will follow at First Reformed Church Cemetery, Pompton Plains.
