Baseball Unable To Bounce Back at Fairfield

Four Fordham Errors Lead to 6-4 Win by Stags

Four costly errors by the Fordham Rams turned out to be the difference at Fairfield's Alumni Diamond, as the Fairfield Stags posted a 6-4 win over the Rams on Tuesday.

With the loss, Fordham goes to 15-23 on the season, while Fairfield improved to 9-24.

Fordham opened the scoring in the third, as Ian Edmiston ripped a one-out double to left, his team-leading 11th of the year.  One out later, Ryan McNally also doubled to left to score Edmiston for the 1-0 lead.

Fairfield responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a pair of Fordham errors to grab a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth, it was Fordham's turn to score a run on an error.  Joseph DeVito led off with a single up the middle, extending his hit streak to eight games, and moved to second on a single by Tim O'Connor.  Joseph Runco hit a ground ball to third that the third baseman couldn't handle, allowing DeVito to score on the play to make it a 3-2 game.

The Stags got that run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by Drew Arciuolo.

Fordham climbed back within one in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single by DeVito, but the Stags answered with a two-run home run by Drew Blake, his second of the season, to lead by a 6-3 score.

The Rams got within two, 6-4, in the eighth as Runco was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Edmiston.  Charles Galiano then hit into a double play, allowing Runco to score.

Fordham would get a chance to rally in the ninth, as pinch-hitter Matthew Kozuch singled to right and moved to second when Jason Lundy was hit by a pitch.  However, Kozuch would get thrown out at third base trying to steal with Lundy going to second.  DeVito then singled through the left side to put runners at the corners with one away.  Pinch-hitter Mark Donadio though would foul out, while Ryan Mahoney grounded out to second to end the game.

Kirk Haynes, Jr. (2-3) was the hard luck loser, as he only gave up one earned run in four innings of work to go with four strikeouts.  David Manasek pitched the final four innings, as he gave up two unearned runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate, DeVito was 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Edmiston was also 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.  McNally was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and two stolen bases with Runco adding a pair of steals and a run scored.  The two stolen bases by Runco moved him past Bobby Kingsbury (2000-02) and into a tie with Pete DeLuca (1989-92) for seventh on the Rams' career stolen base list with 68.

The Rams are back in action on Wednesday, April 22nd, when Fordham hosts Columbia for a 4:00 PM doubleheader at Houlihan Park.  Both games will be seven-inning games.
