Behind an excellent pitching effort from the duo of
Greg Weissert and
Jimmy Murphy and a couple of clutch hits from
Ryan McNally and
Jason Lundy, the Fordham Rams posted a 5-3 win over the George Washington Colonials on Friday at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia.
Â
With the win, Fordham improved to 14-21 on the season, 5-5 in the Atlantic 10, while the Colonials fell to 22-11 on the year, 9-3 in the league.
Â
The game was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings between Fordham's
Greg Weissert and George Washington's Bobby LeWarne, as neither team could push a run across the plate.
Â
The scoreless game was broken up in the fifth inning when the Colonials' Eli Kashi connected on an RBI-single to left, scoring Matt Cosentino from second.
Â
Fordham responded with four runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.Â
Charles Galiano led off with a single to left center, followed by a walk to
Ryan Mahoney.Â
Ian Edmiston laid down the sacrifice bunt that the pitcher couldn't handle, loading the bases with no outs.Â
Ryan McNally then connected on a two-run double to left center, scoring Galiano and Mahoney. After a ground out,
Jason Lundy lined a single up the middle to score Edmiston and McNally for the 4-1 edge.
Jimmy Murphy got the final eight outs on Friday
to record his second save of the year.Â
The Rams added to the lead in the seventh, as
Mark Donadio led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by
Matthew Kozuch, and scored on a single by Galiano.
Â
George Washington cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the frame, picking up an RBI-single and an RBI-ground out. The Rams would limit the damage to just the two runs, as reliever
Jimmy Murphy got a 6-3 double play to end the threat.
Â
Murphy would go on to record the final six outs to post his second save of the year. Weissert went 6.1 innings to earn his third win of the year, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.Â
Â
At the plate, Galiano was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Runco was 2-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases, as he moved into ninth place on Fordham's career stolen base list, passing Vincent Ferraro (1980-83) with 64 stolen bases.
Â
The same two teams match up for game two of this series at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
