Box ScoreBrooklyn, N.Y. (September 5, 2014) – The Fordham women's soccer team picked up its fourth straight win of the year but the Rams did it the hard way, rallying for a pair of second half goals to defeat Long Island University, 2-1, on the LIU Field.
With the win, Fordham improves to 4-1 while LIU falls to 0-5. It is the first 4-1 start for the Rams since the 2004 squad opened 4-1 and the four-game winning streak is the longest for a Fordham women's soccer team since 2012.
"I thought we came out slow in the first half, but it was a tale of two halves," said Fordham head coach
Jessica Clinton. "After halftime, the players were able to get together, sort things out and play our brand of soccer. We were able to focus on us, play to our strengths and execute. I am proud if how the team played in the second half, but our players know that we need to play a complete game, home or away."
The Blackbirds took a 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute when Lucy Gunton-Jones fed Madison Gomez who took a shot from the left side from eight yards that went past Fordham keeper
Ally White.
Despite the deficit, the Rams controlled play for most of the first 45 minutes, outshooting LIU, 10-3, in the half.
The Rams managed to knot the game early in the second half as
Jessica Widmann and
Kate McDonnell combined to get the ball to an open
Ivana Lahcanski in front of the goal and Lahcanski beat LIU keeper Jessica Montrose for her first goal of the year.
The game remained tied until the 80th minute when Widmann found the back of the net to put the Rams up for good with her second tally of the year.
Fordham outshot the Blackbirds 12-2 in the second half and 22-5 for the game. White made one save in net over the first 45 minutes while
Megan Fitzgerald picked up her third win of the year with a clean sheet in the second half. Montrose made nine saves for LIU.
The Rams return to action next Friday, September 12, as they travel to New Rochelle to face the Iona College Gaels at 3:00 PM.
