Women’s Soccer Falls to Stony Brook in Overtime

Ram Comeback Falls Short in Overtime

Stony Brook's Raven Edwards scored on a breakaway just 2:14 into overtime, as the Seawolves held off the Fordham Rams, 3-2, in women's soccer action on Sunday.

With the loss, Fordham goes to 6-3-0, while Stony Brook improved to 3-6-0.

For the second straight game, the Rams opened the scoring early in the 11th minute.  Jessica Widmann got the play started with a pass to Maria Lorena Canicatti.  Canicatti quickly crossed the ball in front of the net, where Kate McDonnell headed in her third goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.

The score remained at 1-0 through the rest of the half, as the Rams outshot the Seawolves, 7-4 in the first half.

Stony Brook then picked up their play in the second half, getting the equalizer in the 60th minute.  Megan Rea scored her first goal of the season, off a cross from Maddie Good.

Good then put the Seawolves ahead, 2-1, in the 71st minute.  Tess Devereaux got the ball to Shannon Grogan for the cross in front, where Good re-directed the ball past Fordham goalkeeper Megan Fitzgerald.

In the waning minutes of regulation, Fordham would get their chance to knot the game up at two, as a handball in the box was called awarding a penalty kick to the Rams.  Widmann then calmly scored on the attempt for her fourth goal of the season, forcing overtime.

The extra session would not last long, as Devereaux found Raven Edwards with a through ball to put her on a breakaway, and scored the game-winning marker.

The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 28th, as the Rams host Columbia at Jack Coffey Field, beginning at 3:00 PM.
