The Fordham women's soccer team knew it would be in for a fight in order to keep its program win streak alive on Friday against a stingy Providence team. Despite an opening goal by the Rams, Providence scored three first half goals to snap Fordham's win streak at six games by a final of 3-1.
The loss puts Fordham's record at 6-2-0, while Providence improved to 4-3-2.
The Rams wasted little time getting on the board, making it a 1-0 game in the sixth minute.
Nicol Natale drove the right side of the field, and slotted a ball back to
Ivana Lahcanski. Lahcanski then drilled home her second goal of the season beating Providence goalkeeper Kristyn Shea.
The Friars answered right back 55 seconds later off a corner kick that wasn't cleared, and was eventually knocked in by Christina Klaum from the top of the box for her first tally of the year.
Providence then took a 2-0 lead in the 32
nd minute, as Allison Walton scored her first goal of the season, as she intercepted a pass and scored into the right side of the net.
The Friars extended the lead to 3-1 just before half time in the 43
rd minute, as Alyssa Martino found Catherine Zimmerman on the right side for her fourth goal of the year.
Fordham came close to getting back in the game in the 79
th minute, when
Kate McDonnell took a shot on net that was just punched over the crossbar by the Providence keeper, leaving the game with a 3-1 final score.
Shea made three saves for Providence, while Fordham goalkeeper
Ally White had four stops.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 21
st, when the Rams travel to Stony Brook for a 2:00 PM match.
