Pair of Prospects Readies for U-20 Championship

Incoming Freshmen Asnate Fomina and Britt Zappeij Will Compete in Udine, Italy, from July 3rd to the 13th

BRONX, N.Y.- Just a few months before beginning their collegiate careers at Rose Hill, two future Rams will compete for their respective home countries at the FIBA U-20 European Championship.

Incoming freshman Asnate Fomina (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary School No. 49) will suit up for the Latvian squad, while future teammate Britt Zappeij (Tiel, Netherlands/CTO Amsterdam) will take to the floor for the Dutch club.

The tournament will be held in Udine, Italy, from July 3rd-13th, with 16 teams competing for the Division A European Championship.

A member of several Latvian national teams in the past, Fomina put forth a spectacular effort at this tournament a year ago, averaging 6.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game.  Her 4.6 helpers per outing were good enough to lead the tournament in that category.

Standing at 6-1 with the ability to play both the guard and forward positions, Zappeij shone for Holland at the 2013 U-18 European Championship, captaining the Dutch squad to a fourth place finish and averaging 5.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest.

Fomina and Zappeij will join another European standout when they arrive in the Bronx, as current Ram Alina Gjerkes has been a member of past Slovenian junior national teams and currently holds a spot on the country's senior national squad.
