May 17, 2014 (Bronx, N.Y.) – The mystery of whether Fordham would qualify for the 2014 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship was solved on Friday when George Washington fell to St. Bonaventure, clinching the Rams their first conference championship berth since 2010. Today the only question was where the Rams will be seeded and with Fordham's 5-2 loss to VCU at Houlihan Park the Rams will enter the championship as the seventh seed.

With the loss, Fordham closes out the regular season with a 23-28 overall record, 13-14 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU closes out its regular season with a 34-18 mark, 15-10 in the conference.

After exploding for 19 hits in the second game of the doubleheader with VCU on Thursday, Fordham was held to just four hits tonight by four VCU pitchers.

After Fordham starter Kirk Haynes, Jr., held the visitors to one hit while fanning two over the first two innings, VCU got to reliever Jonathan Reich in the third and fourth, scoring once in the third and three times in the fourth. Matt Davis led off the VCU third with a walk and was sacrifice to second, A Cody Acker single moved him to third where he scored on a Joey Cujas sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Vimael Machin was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and he moved to third on a Bill Cullen single, with Cullen taking second on the throw. One out later, Logan Farrar hit a ground ball to third but Ian Edmiston's throw to the plate was wide, allowing Machin to score. After Farrar stole second, Trevor Marino singled to plate both runners and give VCU a 4-0 lead.

Fordham got two back in the fifth when Rob McCunney opened the inning with a single and Brendan Maghini knocked him in with a double to right, with Maghini taking third when the ball was misplayed in right. Edmiston then delivered McCunney with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 game.

VCU made it a 5-2 game on an Acker RBI single in the seventh and Seth Greene made the lead stand up, throwing two perfect innings of relief, striking out four.

Fordham will face Saint Joseph's, the number two seed, on Wednesday, May 21, at Saint Louis' Billiken Sports Center at 1:30 PM
