With the loss, Fordham falls to 13-18 on the year, 4-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's improved to 17-9 on the year, 6-3 in the league.
The Hawks jumped on Fordham starting pitcher
Joseph Serrapica right away in the first inning, netting three runs on three hits, two walks, and a Fordham error.
Fordham picked up a run in the second to close the gap to 3-1.
Charles Galiano singled up the middle with one out and moved to second on a walk to
Mark Donadio. After a ground out advanced the runners, Saint Joseph's pitcher Daniel Thorpe committed a balk, allowing Galiano to score.
The Hawks got that run right back in the third, as Stefan Kancylarz tripled to right field with one out and scored on a double by Kevin Kratochwill.
Then in the fourth, Brian O'Keefe connected on a solo home run to right, his fifth of the season, to give the Hawks a 5-1 edge.
Saint Joseph's would add a single run in the sixth three in the seventh, and four in the ninth to close out a 13-1 win.
Fordham managed just five hits in the game, as Thorpe was in control through his seven innings of work, improving to 6-0 on the season. Galiano had two of Fordham's five hits, while
Tim Swatek, Donadio, and
Ryan Mahoney had one each.
On the hill, Serrapica (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits with four walks in 1.2 innings of work.
Greg Weissert tossed 1.1 innings of relief (2 H, 1 R), while
Cody Johnson threw four innings of relief (6 H, 5 R).
Shane McDonald pitched the final two innings for Fordham (5 H, 4 R).
The same two teams will face off for game two of this series at 4:00 PM on Saturday.
