Box Score
There was no shortage of drama on Sunday morning at Houlihan Park, as the Fordham Rams and Dayton Flyers resumed their series finale all knotted at three in the seventh. Dayton cashed in immediately in the seventh, but a two-run double by Fordham's
Charles Galiano in the eighth and a clutch relief effort by
J.C. Porter gave the Rams a 5-4 win.
With the win, Fordham improves to 10-13 overall, 3-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton fell to 9-16 overall, 3-3 in the league.
The game resumed from Saturday in the top of the seventh inning, with two outs, a runner on second base, and a 1-2 count to Dayton's Alex Harris. He faced Fordham reliever
Greg Weissert and immediately put Dayton ahead with a double down the left field line, scoring Kuris Duggan for a 4-3 lead.
Fordham tried to respond in the bottom of the frame off Dayton reliever Nick Weybright, as
Ian Edmiston reached on an infield single, and was sacrificed to second. However, two more ground outs ended that potential rally.
The Rams though would break through in the eighth, taking advantage of Dayton's fifth error of the contest.
Joseph Runco got things going with a single through the right side with one out. After a fly out,
Rob McCunney's ground ball to third was fumbled, leaving runners at first and second.
Charles Galiano then drove a ball to the right center gap that Harris missed on a diving catch attempt, allowing both Runco and McCunney to score.
Dayton then got their chance to tie the game in the ninth, as Weissert walked the leadoff batter Greg Rhude and hit Duggan with a pitch.
J.C. Porter came on to relieve Weissert, and was able to strike out Robby Sunderman on a two-strike bunt attempt for the first out of the inning. After a fly out to left, Porter got Harris to foul out to first base to end the game.
Weissert (1-0) earned the win in relief, giving up one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief, while Porter recorded his first career save.
At the plate, Runco was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base, with Edmiston also registering a pair of hits.
The Fordham baseball team will be back in action on Tuesday, April 1
st, when the Rams begin a six-game road trip at Albany, beginning at 3:30 PM.
