Box Score
Despite a three-hit day from
Ryan McNally, the Fordham baseball team was edged out in its season opener on Friday, 5-3, by Wofford College in Spartansburg, South Carolina.
Â
The Rams got off to a good start, taking the initial lead in the top of the second inning. With two out,
Luke Stampfl got his first collegiate hit, a double to left center, and then scored on an RBI-single from
Ryan McNally.
Â
The Terriers responded with a single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead. In the third, Derek Hirsch led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a Josh Hyman single up the middle.
Â
In the fourth, Wofford executed the first and third rundown to get the team's second run, while in the fifth, the Terriers scored a run on a wild pitch.
Â
Fordham got a run back in the seventh, courtesy of a
Joseph Runco RBI-double, which scored McNally from second after he had doubled.
Â
Wofford though replied immediately with two runs in the bottom half of the seventh to lead, 5-2.
Â
In the ninth, Fordham put together a rally and got the game-tying run to the plate.Â
Matthew Kozuch started the inning with a single, but was forced out on a
Ryan Mahoney fielder's choice. A throwing error would put Mahoney on second base on the play, and he would get pinch-run for by
Rob McCunney. After a ground out, McNally plated McCunney with a single to left and advanced to second base on an error, bringing Runco to the plate as the potential tying run. Runco though would fly out to right to end the ballgame.
Â
For Fordham,
Brett Kennedy (0-1) made the start, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.Â
Jonathan Reich (1.1 IP, 1 H),
Cody Johnson (1.0 IP, 2 R, 1 H), and
Greg Weissert (1 IP, 2 K) all pitched in relief. At the plate, McNally finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while six other Rams had one hit apiece.
Â
The Fordham baseball team will play game two of the season on Saturday, when the Rams take on Presbyterian at 12:00 PM. The game will be played at USC Upstate.
