May 16, 2013 - Bronx, N.Y. - The 2013 Fordham University baseball season hasn't exactly gone according to plan, especially for the seniors who were hoping to close out their careers with a trip to the Atlantic 10 Championship. But two Fordham seniors stepped up today to help the Rams sweep a doubleheader from St. Bonaventure as Joseph Charest threw a complete game, seven-hitter in the first game, and Ryan Lee homered and drove in four runs in the nightcap to lead Fordham to identical 5-3 wins at Houlihan Park.
With the sweep, Fordham improves to 22-32 overall, 8-15 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure falls to 19-28 overall, 8-15 in the conference.
Game One - Final Stats - Game 1
The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Joseph Runco opened the frame reaching on an error and stole second. After Lee moved him to third with a ground out, Mike Mauri brought Runco in with a single through the left side, the first of four hits in the game for Mauri.
The lead held up until the third when the Bonnies scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. Bret Heath walked to opening the inning and, one out later, moved to third on an Eric Jutca single. Jason Radwan followed with a single to plate Heath and moved Jutca to third where he scored on a Joel Rosencrance sacrifice fly.
Fordham tied the game in the home half of the third as Lee singled with one out and stole second. He appeared to have scored on a Mauri single but was called out for missing third base. Dan Sorine managed to deliver a run for the Rams with a single that scored Mauri.
The game remained 2-2 until the sixth when the Rams scored three times. Mauri led things off with a single and stole second. One out later, Charles Galiano brought Mauri in with a single and later in the inning Galiano scored on a David Judisky home run to left, his third of year.
The Bonnies got leadoff runners in the eighth and ninth but Charest was able to pitch around them, stranding Rosencrance at first in the eighth and getting Jonathan Diaz to ground into a 6-4-3 double play in the ninth before inducing Michael Meredith to ground put to end the game.
Charest struck out five to record his third win and second complete game of the year. Mauri was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored while Judisky collected two hits, including the two-run home run, as did Galiano.
Game Two - Final Stats - Game 2
The nightcap started out as a pitcher's duel between Fordham's Chris Pike and St. Bonaventure's Rosencrance with neither allowing a run over the first three innings. The Bonnies broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth as Rosencrance helped his own cause with an RBI double.
The Rams managed to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when Joseph DeVito was hit by a pitch with one out and came around to score when Lee hit a shot over the right field wall, his first home run of the year.
Fordham picked up two more in the eighth as Sam Careccia opened the inning reaching on an error, and two outs later, moved to second when DeVito walked. Runco singled off St. Bonaventure reliever Eddie Gray to load the bases and Lee delivered Careccia and DeVito with a single to center to put the Rams up 5-1.
The Bonnies wouldn't go down without a fight as Radwan led off the ninth with a triple and Rosencrance walked with Chris Grey coming on to pinch run for Rosencrance. Radwan scored on a Billy Urban single which moved Grey to second and a walk to Austin Ingraham loaded the bases. Rich Anastasi came on to relieve Brett Kennedy on the mound and got Josh Martin to hit a double play ball but the throw to first was in the dirt as Grey scored to make it a 5-3 game. Anastasi then got Thad Johnson to pop up and struck out Diaz looking to end the game.
Pike threw the first seven innings for the Rams, allowing just four hits while fanning four. Runco, Lee and Careccia each collected a pair of hits for Fordham in game two.
The two teams close out the 2013 season with a single game on Friday at noon.
