Bronx, N.Y. (November 20, 2013) – The Fordham University men's basketball roster grew by one today as the Rams officially welcomed 13-year-old Ky-Mani Sewer to the squad after he signed an official letter of intent with Fordham two weeks ago.

The Fordham men's basketball program and Sewer were brought together by Team Impact, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses by establishing and expanding vibrant team-based support networks.

A 13-year-old from the Bronx, Ky-Mani is excited to become a member of the Fordham men's basketball family. This past January, Ky-Mani started experiencing ongoing headaches.  After a cat scan and MRI, doctors found that he had a brain tumor on his optical nerve as well as a tangle of abnormal arteries and veins called a Brain Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM).

Just two weeks after his diagnosis, Ky-Mani had surgery and he continues to have medical appointments every other week, which include oncology, endocrinology and ophthalmology visits.

Ky-Mani and his family, including his two brothers, arrived on campus on November 3 to meet the team for the first time. He will be a part of the team going forward, and will celebrate his 14th birthday (which occurred on November 18) at the Fordham-Sacred Heart game on Saturday, November 23.

The men's basketball team is not the first Fordham program to welcome a child through Team IMPACT.  In January, softball welcomed 14-year-old Gloria Mateo to their squad while on the same day the men's basketball team welcomed Ky-Mani, the women's squad was joined by Imani Simon, a five-year-old girl from Yonkers, N.Y.
