With just three games remaining, the Fordham women's soccer team pulled out all the stops on Sunday in a wild affair with UMass at Jack Coffey Field. Trailing 2-1 in the second half, Fordham's
Jessica Widmann scored the game-tying goal and then assisted on
Maria Lorena Canicatti's game-winning goal in the second overtime, as the Rams defeated the Minutewomen, 3-2.
With the win, Fordham moves to 4-8-3 overall, 2-3-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Massachusetts moved to 6-8-2 overall, 2-3-1 in the league.
The action started right away in the opening minutes, as Fordham got the early goal in the seventh minute.
Jessica Widmann controlled the ball on the right side of the field, laying off a pass to an oncoming
Casey Nowakowski from her defender position. Nowakowski lifted a perfect volley shot into the top left corner of the net for the senior's first career goal.
Massachusetts knotted the game at one just 13 minutes later, as Grace Coombs ripped a shot from distance that Fordham goalkeeper
Ally White was able to knock way. However, Brittany Moore quickly pounced on the rebound and got the ball just over the line for her seventh goal of the season.
Moore wasn't done, as she put the Minutewomen ahead, 2-1, in the 59
th minute. Jen Coppola set the offensive break with a pass to Megan Burke in the middle of the field. Burke put a quick touch on the ball and sent a lead pass to Moore down the right side of the box, just sneaking a shot through White for her second goal of the game and eighth of the season.
Only 11 minutes later, the seesaw affair went back in Fordham's favor, when the Rams knotted the game at two.
Ivana Lahcanski started the play near the Fordham bench, crossing the ball to
Kaitlyn Carballeira, who looked primed to pull the trigger. Instead, Carballeira dished the ball right to an oncoming Widmann, who blasted home a shot to the top right corner for her third goal of the season.
From there, Fordham took control getting multiple chances at the go-ahead goal, but could not find it in regulation. In the first overtime session, Fordham laced eight shots at the Massachusetts goal, but the game remained tied thanks to three saves by Danielle Kriscenski.
However, the Rams finally broke the deadlock in the second overtime period in the 108
th minute. Widmann got the ball on the left side of the box, playing a cross to
Maria Lorena Canicatti. Canicatti settled and fired from 15 yards out, right into the back of the net for the game-winning goal. It was Canicatti's third goal of the season.
In net, White made five saves for her fourth win of the year, while Kriscenski had eight for the Minutewomen.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 27
th, as the Rams travel to Dayton for a 12:00 PM conference match.
