Bronx, N.Y. - (Jan. 19, 2013) - In one of the top tri-meets among Atlantic 10 schools, the Fordham swimming & diving team came out looking strong in its meet with the Richmond women and La Salle's full squad. The Fordham men's team defeated La Salle for the first time in four seasons, 156.5-141.5, while the women topped La Salle, 182-113. In the premiere match-up of the top two female teams in the league over the past four years, Richmond finished with a 161-124 win over the Rams.
The Fordham men won nine events on the day with three swimmers posting multiple victories. Freshman Steve Sholdra and junior Shintaro Noguchi led the way with wins in three events each. Sholdra captured the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:33.81, the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.52, and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.75. Noguchi earned victories in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.91, the 100-yard freestyle in 46.84 seconds, and the 100-yard butterfly in 50.54 seconds.
Senior Thomas Yi also finished first in two events, as he tied for first with La Salle's Dave Derr in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 52.50 seconds, while also winning the 200-yard backstroke in 1:52.49. Senior Devon Morris also gave the Rams a boost as he returned to the Fordham line-up by taking home the 50-yard freestyle in 21.80 seconds.
In the women's competition, the Rams claimed the top spot in three events, while being touched out in two others.
Senior Brienne Ryan won both backstroke events for the Rams, claiming the 100-yard event in a season-best time of 55.01 seconds and the 200-yard event in a season-best time of 2:00.55.
Fordham also posted the top time in the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Alana Biagioli, Chandler Lulley, Kellie Lyver, and Ryan clocked in a season-best time of 3:30.30.
The Rams might have had two more event wins in the 200 medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle, but were just touched out in both races by Richmond entries. Fordham's relay of Ryan, Kelly Carroll, Shannon Lulley, and Biagioli took second in a season-best time of 1:45.19, just .04 seconds behind the Spiders. Biagioli would also get touched out in the 200-yard freestyle, as she finished second to Richmond's Allison Titley by .46 seconds in 1:54.81.
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will next be in action on Saturday, January 26th, as the Rams take on Rider, Yale, and Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey, beginning at 10:30 AM.
