Bronx, N.Y. - After a two-week layoff, the Fordham swimming & diving team was back in action on Saturday at the Messmore Aquatic Center, as the Rams hosted both Boston College and Williams College, marking the fourth straight year that these teams have gotten together for a tri-meet. Fordham had a very strong showing with the women's team defeating both Ephs and the Eagles, while the men's squad narrowly dropped both match-ups.
The Fordham women defeated Williams, 166-128, and Boston College, 223-75, while the men's squad fell to Williams, 156-140, and Boston College, 161.5-137.5.
Fordham would post 16 event wins on the afternoon, led by junior Shintaro Noguchi and freshman Steve Sholdra, as each won three individual events. Noguchi won the 200 freestyle by tying a season-best with a time of 1:42.00, while later winning the 100 freestyle in a season-best time of 46.37 seconds. His third win came in the 100 butterfly, as he clocked in at 50.01 seconds. Sholdra captured both distance freestyle events, taking the 1000 freestyle in 9:28.74 and the 500 freestyle in 4:37.26, while also winning the 200 butterfly in 1:52.90.
Senior co-captain Thomas Yi was also a multiple event winner on the men's side, taking home both the 100 (52.83) and 200 (1:53.32) backstroke events.
In addition to the event winners, sophomore Patrick Militti was the top finisher in the 50 freestyle, taking second in 21.91 seconds, while in the relays, the men's 200 medley relay team and the 400 freestyle relay both finished third in 1:36.52 and 3:12.30, respectively.
On the women's side, senior
Brienne Ryan was the lone multiple event winner for Fordham, winning both the 50 (23.90) and 100 (52.44) freestyle events. Ryan was also a part of both winning relay teams for Fordham. She joined with sophomore
Kelly Carroll, freshman
Shannon Lulley, and senior
Alana Biagioli to capture the 200 medley relay in a season-best time of 1:46.11, while Ryan, Biagioli, senior
Kellie Lyver and freshman
Chandler Lulley took home the 400 freestyle relay in a season-best time of 3:31.21.
Carroll and Shannon Lulley would also win individual events for Fordham on top of their relay victories. Carroll captured the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 1:06.09, while also taking second in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.55 with Lulley winning the 100 butterfly in 57.72 seconds.
Other individual winners for the Rams included sophomore Frances Warren in the 200 butterfly (2:06.87 - season-best) and freshman Theresa Goehring in the 200 backstroke (2:06.34).
The Fordham swimming & diving teams are now off until Friday, January 18th, when the Rams host the Iona College Gaels at the Messmore Aquatic Center, beginning at 4:00 PM.
