Swimming & Diving Pulls Off Sweep at Fairfield

Fairfield, Conn. - Despite changes in distances and format, the Fordham swimming & diving team came through with a strong performance at Fairfield on Friday night, as the Rams swept the dual meet from the Stags. The 16-event format was in short course meters, but the Rams were up to challenge as the women's team won, 166-123, and the men's team won, 177-121.

With the victories, Fordham improved to 3-1 in women's competition and 2-2 in men's.

In the women's meet, Fordham won 14 of 16 events, led by senior Brienne Ryan, who won two individual events and was a part of both relay wins. Ryan won the 50-meter freestyle in 27.34 seconds and the 100-meter butterfly in 1:05.34, and then was a part of the winning 200-meter medley relay team (2:03.62) and the 200-meter freestyle relay team (1:52.31).

Besides Ryan, senior diver Brittany Salas was the only other dual event winner, taking home the one-meter dive with a score of 214.50 and the three-meter competition with a total of 227.70.

Three Rams would win an individual event and then join Ryan on the relay wins. Anna Marshall won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:15.96 and was a part of the 200-meter medley relay, while Megan Gray won the 100-meter freestyle in 1:00.83 and was a member of the 200-meter freestyle relay. Megan Zarriello was another member of the winning 200-meter freestyle relay that won an individual event, as she took the 200-meter backstroke in 2:25.23.

Other winners for Fordham included Megan Gehrich in the 800-meter freestyle (9:27.77), Kara Field in the 200-meter freestyle (2:10.56), Kelly Carroll in the 100-meter backstroke (1:07.63), Victoria McGovern in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:43.34), and Alana Biagioli in the 400-meter freestyle (4:37.09).

On the men's side, Fordham won 10 of 16 events, led by sophomore Zach Jacobsen and junior Shintaro Noguchi, and each won two individual events and one relay. Jacobsen took home the 800-meter freestyle in 8:48.47 and the 200-meter backstroke in 2:13.20, while Noguchi won the 200-meter butterfly (2:08.13) and the 200-meter individual medley (2:08.77). Both swimmers then joined Nick Burbidge and Pat Militti to win the 200-meter freestyle in 1:37.65.

On top of the relay, Militti also won the 400-meter freestyle in 4:13.01. Other winners for Fordham included Will Thomann in the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.05), Steve Sholdra in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:08.48), Ben Dwyer in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:34.47) and Kevin Wong in the one-meter dive (220.43).

The Fordham swimming & diving teams will next be in action on Saturday, November 3rd, when the Rams host the Boston University Terriers at 1:00 PM in the Messmore Aquatic Center.
