Charlie Elwood, the Fordham University director of athletic administration for the past eleven years, has been promoted to deputy director of athletics it was announced today by director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation David Roach.
"This promotion and title change is in recognition of Charlie's outstanding work and dedication to the department," said Roach. "He has done an exceptional job in his role as director of athletic administration for the past eleven years and I look forward to working with him and utilizing his expertise as we move forward."
As the director of athletic administration the past eleven years, Elwood, a 1980 Fordham graduate, has been responsible for Fordham's 22 intercollegiate sports, the intramural, recreation and club sport programs, as well as the comprehensive day-to-day internal operations of the Athletic Department. These responsibilities included fiscal management, facility management, scheduling, staff training and development, compliance, implementation of the department's long range planning process, and managing related support operations for all varsity sports.
Elwood has also been active on the national level, serving as a member of the NCAA Division I men's soccer committee from 2006-2010. On the conference scene, Elwood served two three-year stints on the Atlantic 10 men's soccer championships committee, serving as chairman of the committee in 2005-2006 and 2008-09. For the past four years, Elwood has been the co-chairman of the committee.
Elwood arrived at Fordham from St. John's University where he was a senior associate athletic director in 2000 and an associate athletic director/external affairs from 1997-2000. He joined the University in February 1996, after eight years in the department of athletics at the College of William & Mary.
At St. John's, he was responsible for overseeing the areas of marketing, advertising, fundraising, ticketing, business office and the equipment room for St. John's 21 intercollegiate sports. He served as the liaison with Madison Square Garden for scheduling and game operations and was the scheduling administrator for men's basketball. He was also the director of licensing for the university.
Elwood served as the Tournament Manager of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament First/Second Rounds at Nassau Coliseum in March 2001, hosted by St. John's. In that capacity, Elwood managed all operations at the site, from travel and lodging for competing teams to media and game operations as well as fiscal responsibility for the tournament.
Elwood was a member of the BIG EAST men's soccer committee from 1997-2001 and served as its chair through the 2000-01 academic year.
Prior to his arrival at St. John's, Elwood served as assistant athletic director of business affairs at the College of William & Mary from November 1988 to February 1996. He was responsible for supervising financial operations of the business department and ticket operations.
A 1980 graduate of Fordham University, Elwood began his career in Chicago in 1982 at DePaul, when he was hired as the assistant athletic business manager and later was promoted to director of business affairs. He worked there for six years (1982-88), before leaving to take the position at William & Mary. He received his master's of science in sports administration from St. Thomas (Fla.) University in 1981 and his MBA in marketing from DePaul University in 1986.
Charlie and his wife, Carolyn, are the proud parents of two daughters, Blake (15) and Kylie (13).
