Charlie Elwood, former Senior Associate Athletic Director at St. John’s University, is in his 24th year at Fordham University, his fourth as the Deputy Athletic Director for Business Administration, Operations, and Finance Performance. He previously served as the Deputy Director of Athletics after starting his Fordham career as the Director of Athletic Administration, being named to the post in July of 2001.
Elwood oversees the comprehensive day-to-day internal operations of the Athletic Department. These responsibilities include fiscal management, facility and event management, scheduling, personnel administration, compliance, assisting in the strategic planning process for the department, sports information and the intramural, recreation and club sport programs.
A member of the NCAA Division I men’s soccer committee from 2006-2010, Elwood served as the Chairman of the committee from 2008-09. On the conference scene, Elwood served two three-year stints on the Atlantic 10 men’s soccer championships committee, serving as chair of the committee in 2005-06 and 2008-09. For the past five years, Elwood has been the co-chair of the committee.
Elwood was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director at St. John’s in December 2000 after serving as Associate Athletic Director/External Affairs since July of 1997. He joined the University in February 1996, after eight years in the Department of Athletics at the College of William & Mary.
At St. John’s he was responsible for overseeing the areas of marketing, advertising, fundraising, ticketing, sports information, business office and the equipment room for St. John’s 21 intercollegiate sports. He served as the liaison with Madison Square Garden for scheduling and game operations and was the scheduling administrator for Men’s Basketball. He was also the Director of Licensing for the University.
Elwood served as the Tournament Manager of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament First/Second Rounds at Nassau Coliseum in March 2001, hosted by St. John’s. In that capacity, Elwood managed all operations of the NCAA Championships, from travel and lodging for competing teams to media and game operations as well as fiscal responsibility for the tournament.
Elwood had been a member of the BIG EAST men’s soccer committee since 1997 and served as its chair through the 2000-01 academic year.
He joined the University in 1996 as Associate Athletic Director/Athletic Business Affairs. In that position, he oversaw all elements of the business office, ticket office, facilities, game operations and the equipment room.
Prior to his arrival at St. John’s, Elwood served as Assistant Athletic Director of Business Affairs at the College of William & Mary from November 1988 to February 1996. He was responsible for supervising financial operations of the business department and ticket operations.
A graduate of Fordham University, Elwood began his career in Chicago in 1982 at DePaul, when he was hired to work as Director of Business Affairs. He worked there for six years (1982-88), before leaving to take the position at William & Mary. He received his master of science in sports administration from Biscayne (Fla.) College in 1981 and his MBA in marketing from DePaul University in 1986.
Charlie and his wife, Carolyn, are the proud parents of two daughters, Blake, a 2019 Fordham graduate and 2024 Fordham Law graduate, who was a member of the track and field team, and Kylie, a 2021 Fordham graduate who competed with the Fordham crew and earned a Master's Degree from Fordham in 2022.
