Buffalo, N.Y. - (Feb. 18, 2010) - It was another record breaking day for the Fordham women's swimming & diving team as the group extended their lead at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship, held at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo, New York.
Fordham leads the competition by 80 points with 265 overall. Richmond was the big mover on day two, as they rallied from tenth place to second with 185 points, followed by Massachusetts (165), La Salle (153.5), Duquesne (141), Rhode Island (112), Xavier (111), St. Bonaventure (105), George Washington (90.5), and Saint Louis (82).
The night of finals started with the 500 freestyle, as Fordham's Caitlin Napoli looked to defend her title from last year, and did just that. Napoli posted the Rams' third event win of the championship with a season-best time of 4:55.45. Following her home was teammate Megan McGorry, who took second in her best time of the season at 4:57.85.
The next event saw two more Rams in the "A" final, as Courtney Collyer and Nicole Marshall qualified second and fourth respectively in the 200 individual medley. Collyer ended up breaking the school record in the preliminaries with a time of 2:03.55, breaking the old mark of 2:03.81, which was held by Marshall.
In the final, Collyer earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors, placing second in a time of 2:03.66, while Marshall took fifth overall in a season-best time of 2:05.13.
The championship then turned to the sprinters in the 50 freestyle, where two Rams qualified in both the "A" and "B" finals. In the "B" final, Kelly Lyver placed third in 23.86 seconds (11th overall), while Kelly Bunster was fourth in 23.91 seconds (12th overall).
In the "A" final, Brienne Ryan broke the school record in the 50 freestyle, taking third overall in 23.57 seconds, with Tressa Dunn taking fifth in a season-best time of 23.63 seconds. Ryan broke the previous record of 23.71 seconds, set by Bunster last year.
The last of the individual events was the one-meter dive competition, where all three Fordham divers qualified for the finals. Andrea Krok was Fordham's top diver, taking second overall with a finals score of 245.30 with Elizabeth Dorger placing fourth (241.60) and Brittany Salas ending up seventh (202.10).
The Rams then finished the night with a bronze medal performance in the 200 freestyle relay. Lyver, Christina Cosentino, Alexandra Alessi, and Napoli finished third in a school record time of 1:35.21, breaking the old mark of 1:35.85, set last year.
Day three competition at the Flickinger Center at 10:30 AM on Friday with preliminary heats in the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and the men's three meter diving competition.
