Amherst, Mass. - (Jan. 30, 2010) - Close touch outs and pool records were the two biggest storylines to come out of today's Fordham-Massachusetts swim meet at Joseph Rodgers Pool in Amherst, Massachusetts. The Fordham women (11-0) kept their unbeaten season alive with a 188-112 win behind four pool records, while the Fordham men (6-4) were touched out on multiple occasions, giving UMass a 179-114 win.
The day started with the women's 200 medley relay, comprised of Brienne Ryan, Nicole Marshall, Kelly Bunster, and Tressa Dunn, setting the Rodgers Pool record in 1:46.64. The men's medley relay of Billy Colton, Matthew Grabiak, Ryan Coombs and Justin Coombs came close to matching the women's win, but were touched out by .37 seconds, taking second in 1:35.36.
The next race saw another tight finish in the 1000 freestyle. Fordham's Megan McGorry was touched out by Julie Magyar by just .06 seconds, taking second in 10:34.59.
Fordham had two other close finishes early on the men's side as Colton and Grabiak placed second in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively. Colton posted a time of 52.43, just .12 seconds from an event win, while Grabiak was just .33 seconds behind at 1:00.79.
Grabiak however would win the 200 breaststroke later in the meet in a time of 2:11.92.
Following those close races the Rams then started racking up event wins, led by Napoli in the 200 (1:53.78) and 500 (5:04.47) freestyle, and Ryan, who set the pool record in the 100 backstroke in 56.61 seconds and later won the 200 backstroke (2:04.63).
With the touch outs going against Fordham early, it was only fitting to have one go Fordham's way in the 100 breaststroke, as Marshall won by .02 seconds in a time of 1:06.47. Later, Marshall also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.97.
Courtney Collyer also won two events for the women, as she set the pool record in the 200 individual medley at 2:07.67, while also taking the 200 butterfly in 2:05.84. Bunster was the final pool record of the day, as she won the 100 butterfly in 57.74 seconds.
Dunn (100 free - 52.88), Alexandra Alessi (50 free - 25.00), Elizabeth Dorger (1M dive - 222.89), and the 200 freestyle relay (Kellie Lyver, Bunster, Dunn, Napoli - 1:37.88) rounded out the women's swimming event wins.
