Swimming & Diving Continues To Roll With Dual Meet Sweep of Boston College & Williams

Bronx, N.Y. - (Dec. 5, 2009) - In what is a recurring theme this season, the Fordham swimming & diving teams posted a dual meet sweep of Boston College and Williams College on Saturday at Fordham's Colonel Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center. The Fordham women improved to 8-0 this year with a 213-68 win over Boston College and a 182-99 win over Williams, while the men went to 6-2 on the year with a 160-140 win over Boston College and a 209-88 win over Williams.

The Rams had another stellar day in the pool, posting 11 season-best times, while winning 23 events.

Of those wins, Brienne Ryan once against broke the school record in the 100 backstroke, winning the event in 55.51 seconds. It was the fourth time she has broken that record this season, and is an NCAA "B" qualifying time. Ryan also won the 50 freestyle (23.94), and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay, along with Nicole Marshall, Kelly Bunter, and Tressa Dunn, in a season-best time of 1:45.50.

The Rams had five other dual event winners on the day. Marshall won the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke in 1:07.06 and 2:25.27, respectively, while Ryan Coombs took home the top spot in the 200 butterfly (1:55.81), as well as the 100 butterfly in a season-best time of 51.09 seconds.

Benjamin Otto swept the diving events, scoring 238.70 in the one-meter competition and 256.15 in the three-meter. Justin Coombs and Billy Colton rounded out the dual winners, as Coombs took the 100 freestyle (47.91) with Colton winning the 100 backstroke in a season-best time of 51.90 seconds. The duo then shared the top spot in the 50 freestyle, as they tied for first with a time of 21.78 seconds.

Other winners on the day included Megan McGorry in the 1000 freestyle (10:26.33), Caitlin Napoli in the 200 freestyle (1:53.21), Matthew Grabiak in the 100 breaststroke (59.98 - season-best), Andrea Krok in the one-meter dive (250.25), Bunster in the 100 freestyle (52.58), Robert Gitman in the 200 backstroke (1:54.81 - season-best), Brittany Salas in the three-meter dive (236.25), and Courtney Collyer in the 200 individual medley (2:08.61).

Following the women's 200 medley relay, Fordham also posted wins in the other three relay events. The men's 200 medley relay (Colton, Grabiak, R. Coombs, J. Coombs) won in a season-best time of 1:35.64, while the men's 400 freestyle relay (R. Coombs, Colton, Devon Morris, J. Coombs) finished the meet with a season-best time of 3:07.83. The women's 400 freestyle relay (Kellie Lyver, Bunster, Dunn, Napoli) matched the men's win in a time of 3:33.45.

The Fordham swimming & diving teams are now off for winter break. The team will return to the pool on January 23rd, as the women compete against C.W. Post, beginning at 6:00 PM.
