Bronx, N.Y. - (Nov. 23, 2009) - The Fordham men's swimming & diving team won nine of 16 events on Monday night against Columbia, but was just edged out by the Lions, 155-145, at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.
In addition to nine event wins, the Fordham men (4-2) had five season-best times, which began with the 200 medley relay. The team of Billy Colton, Matthew Grabiak, Ryan Coombs, and Justin Coombs won the event in a season-best time of 1:35.67.
All four members of that relay would win events later in the meet, led by Colton who won the 50 backstroke in 24.83 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 52.14 seconds. Ryan Coombs also captured two wins in the 50 butterfly (23.27) and 100 butterfly (51.20 - season-best).
Grabiak took home first place in the 50 breaststroke in 27.79 seconds, while taking third in the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 1:00.62. Justin Coombs grabbed the top spot in the 100 freestyle in 47.18 seconds, while taking second in the 50 freestyle (22.00).
Benjamin Otto rounded out the individual wins, as he won the three-meter dive with a score of 286.88, while placing fourth in the one-meter board (240.83).
Lucien Monson finished out the individual season-best times in the 1000 freestyle, as he took second in a time of 9:52.58. Monson also grabbed fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:52.37).
The Rams finished the meet in grand style as the 200 freestyle relay of R. Coombs, Colton, Rami Fetyani, and J. Coombs, won in a season-best time of 1:25.40, which was better than three seconds over the second place finisher.
The Fordham swimming & diving team will next be in action on December 5th, when the Rams host a tri-meet with Williams College and Boston College at 12:00 PM.
