Bronx, N.Y. - (Jan. 31, 2009) - The Fordham swimming & diving teams hosted the University of Massachusetts at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon, and came away with a split as the women defeated UMass, 179-109, while the men fell to the Minutemen, 176.5-120.5. The highlight of the meet came in women's 100 breaststroke as Fordham's Nicole Marshall broke her own school record.
With the split, the Fordham women improved to 9-2 on the season, while the men are now 5-4 overall.
The meet opened with Fordham wins in the women's and men's 200 medley relay. Christina Cosentino, Nicole Marshall, Kelly Bunster, and Tressa Dunn posted a season-best time of 1:47.47 for the women, while Billy Colton, Matt Grabiak, Ryan Coombs and Justin Coombs took home the top spot in a season-best time of 1:35.75.
The Rams then got event wins from Alexandria Ukleja and Caitlin Napoli, as Ukleja won the 1000 freestyle in 10:36.22, while Napoli placed first in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.88. Ryan Coombs also tied for first in the men's 200 freestyle in 1:55.16.
Fordham then swept the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke events. Cosentino took the women's 100 backstroke in 58.80 seconds, while Colton was first in the men's competition in 52.39 seconds. Marshall then broke her own school record in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:05.07, topping her 2008 mark of 1:05.30. Sean McManus then captured the men's 100 breaststroke in 1:01.51.
The Rams then got four straight women's event wins, as Courtney Collyer captured the 200 butterfly in 2:05.85, with Bunster taking the 50 freestyle in 24.64. Dunn then won the 100 freestyle in 53.39 seconds with Kristin Colton taking the 200 backstroke in 2:09.22.
Marshall and McManus completed the breaststroke sweep, as they both won the 200 breaststroke. Marshall won in 2:20.84, while McManus won his event in 2:14.97. Ukleja and Bunster then picked up their second wins of the day, as Ukleja took the top spot in the 500 freestyle in 5:11.06, while Bunster captured the 100 butterfly in 58.22.
Fordham then finished with wins in the women's 200 IM and 200 freestyle relay. Collyer won her second event in the IM in 2:10.68, while Bunster, Napoli, Cosentino, and Dunn won the relay in a season-best time of 1:38.33.
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will next be in action on Wednesday, February 4th, as they host St. Francis College, beginning at 6:00 PM.
